About the Event

SAGE-RI is co-sponsoring a workshop entitled “Providing Care to LGBT Older Adults” to be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Rhode Island Health Care Association (RIHCA) at 57 Kilvert St. #200 in Warwick and virtually via Zoom. Four curriculum modules will be presented focusing on the following topics: background information about LGBT older adults, discrimination and its impact on health disparities, understanding LGBT older adults and strategies for improving quality of care including an introduction to the SAGE/USA and Human Rights Campaign Long-term Care Equality Index.

This workshop is aimed toward administrators, directors of nursing, social workers and staff developers in nursing homes and assisted living facilities but is open to anyone working in long-term care or assisted living facilities who is interested in best practices to deliver quality care for LGBT older adults. A train-the-trainer model will enable participants to offer instruction and to share resources on best practices to improve care for LGBT residents in their facilities and to project a more welcoming stance to the community.

SAGE-RI is sponsoring this workshop in partnership with the Rhode Island Health Care Association (RIHCA), the Rhode Island Assisted Living Association (RIALA) and LeadingAge RI, and with support from the Rhode Island Foundation through the Equity Action Fund.

Registration is being handled by the Rhode Island Assisted Living Association (RIALA).  The workshop fee is $65.00. Continuing education credits (3 contact hours) will be provided to long-term care and assisted living facility administrators and nurses through RIALA, RIHCA, and LeadingAge RI. Social workers will be awarded 2.5 credits in cross cultural practice.
